fast ASHANTI
‘fast Ashanti’ rings are modelled in the negative, radically speeding up the ancient lost-wax casting technique I learned from the Ashanti in Africa and the Dokra in India.
I skipped the positive wax model and made a cavity directly in the soft clay, the negative mould into which the molten metal later flows. An archaic experience, shaping the void and relying on creative happenstance.
Pure gold and silver, originally extracted from the earth, is now poured back into it. When the clay mould is shattered, the result comes to light and is either rejected, which is mostly the case, or treasured as a gift.
