AN APOCALYPTIC FRAGMENT
The sun gives
and the arbour takes;
the light it cannot catch
it must pass through to us.
(„Die Günderrode“, Bettine Brentano)
Light was my translation of the prose text “An Apocalyptic Fragment” by Karoline von Günderrode (1780–1806).
Fifteen lamps, casting fifteen symbolic light and shadow signs through paper stencils, adorn the body while the wearer reads her prose.
Subtle, volatile fragments of the 18th century light up, casting their apocalyptical shadows into the here and now.
